Round 8: Review

9 Jun 2015 by Wembley Magpies

The Wembley Amateur Football Club had yet another successful weekend on the field recording four victories from five games in Round 8.

Colts: Wembley 9-11-65 defeated Collegians 8-7-55.

The first match of the day at Allen Park saw two undefeated sides going head to head in the Colts biggest game of the season so far. The match promised to be a tight match and that was certainly the result, with the Colts winning in the end by 10 points and remaining undefeated in season 2015.

Seconds: Wembley 9-12-66 defeated Collegians 5-5-35.

Given the evenness of B Reserve ladder after seven rounds victory was essential for the Seconds if they were to maintain their spot in the top few on the ladder when they took on sixth-placed Collegians in the second match of the day. A 31-point victory over their opponents sees the side climb to second on the competition ladder with a home game against the undefeated ladder leaders Scarborough their next test.

Firsts: Wembley 8-8-56 defeated by Collegians 12-13-85.

The up and down nature of the Firsts season so far for 2015 continued when they took on Collegians in the third and final match of the day at Allen Park in Swanbourne. Despite two goals each from Noakes, Lawrence and Glass the team was not able to get the job done and eventually went down by 29 points at the end of the day. The side now sits at four and four with some work to do over the next couple of weeks to ensure that they once again qualify for finals football in season 2015.

Fours: Wembley 5-15-45 defeated Kalamunda 3-7-25.

Match report by Coach Robbie Biddle:

I think we definitely got out of jail on Saturday. Our inaccurate kicking, meant for about 3 quarters we couldn’t shake Kalamunda off. I still feel we have a bit to work on & improve upon. Some of our ball use & decision making was poor & if we were up against a stronger opponent, they would have made us pay. We started unusually slow & I’ll put it down to a few factors being the bus trip, a smaller ground & I’ll take some responsibility for not getting my match-up’s correct. Our run & carry style is certainly suited to a larger ground & Kalamunda managed to close down our space & force us to make some poor skill errors at times. It’s something we will learn from & take into account if we face similar conditions in the future.

I thought our backline who often were put under siege on the smaller ground, really stood up with the leadership of Ducky & Smithy. Shaun Warnock really stood tall all day. Mason led our midfield & has been a real find, with his clean hands & hard at it approach. Daylight gave us plenty of drive all day & BA was one of our better users. When the game was certainly up for grabs in the third term, Havs led by example & had several inside 50’s & also won quite a bit of the contested ball. It was pleasing to see him willing to get his hands dirty & say ‘follow me boys’.

We look forward to being at home (Hendo) this week to face Wanneroo. I’m hoping for a stronger start & more intensity around the contest. With such strong numbers, spots will be up for grabs, so let’s have a strong showing on the track & continue our winning form.

Thirds: Wembley 11-6-72 defeated Kalamunda 5-8-38

The Thirds capped off a great bus trip to Pickering Brook by outlasting their opponents in a hard and physical match, eventually recording a 34-point victory. The win result of weeks of hard work by the team and, sees the side leapfrog their opponents into third place on the ladder and will hopefully give the side some momentum as they move into the back-end of the season. The Thirds and Fourths return to Henderson Park in Round 8 to take on Wanneroo.
