Round 9: Review

15 Jun 2015 by Wembley Magpies

The Wembley Amateur Football Club had yet another successful weekend on-field banking four wins from five matches in Round 9.

The Colts, Seconds and Firsts all played host to Scarborough in three massive matches at Pat Goodridge Reserve.

Colts: Wembley 10-16-76 defeated Scarborough 2-6-18.

Kicking off the action for the day at Pat Goodridge was the Colts who were able to extend their undefeated run to eight straight with a resounding 58-point victory, a margin that could have ballooned out further had the goal kicking been more accurate on the morning.

Seconds: Wembley 18-9-117 defeated Scarborough 3-7-25.

Second up for the day at Pat Goodridge Reserve saw the Seconds record a commanding and resounding 92-point victory over their previously undefeated opponents. The huge victory means that the Seconds have now closed the gap between first and second on the ladder to just one match and will be hoping to close the gap further in the coming mid-season rounds.

Firsts: Wembley 8-10-58 defeated by Scarborough 10-9-69.

Unfortunately the Firsts were not able to make it three-from-three at Pat Goodridge when they took on first-placed Scarborough in the main match of the day, falling short by 11 points. The loss means the Firsts now sit at 4-5 on the season and have plenty of work to do through the mid and late season as they strive for finals football in 2015.

Also at home in Round 9 was the Thirds and Fourths who played host to Wanneroo at Wembley’s old home, Henderson Park.

Fourths: Wembley 24-15-159 defeated Wanneroo 1-3-9.

Report by Robbie Biddle:

It’s not everyday you have a 150 point win!

What was really pleasing that we overcame a slow start & really prided ourselves in outworking & outrunning Wanneroo after quarter time. I thought our ball use & composure was really good & also the run that guys like Ned, Yates & Havs gave us. These guys were prepared to break the lines & take the game on, encouraging others to do the same & also bringing others into the contest. Despite the flooding tactics of Wanneroo, our forwards made good use of their opportunities, with our mids giving us plenty of entries & constantly putting the footy into the ‘hotspot’. If Kon & Keith were not clunking marks, BA, Tails & Flame were constantly providing headaches as damaging small forwards. I’m full of praise for the ruckwork of big Luke, giving us first use & his combining with Dane & Daylight was superb. ‘Boony’ was outstanding & clearly our best player. Always prepared to do the grunt work in the middle, he is a real barometer for the team’s success. It was great to have the class & poise of Picca’s in the side & hopefully we can retain his services for a few more games this year. Finally, it was pleasing to see Pressie & Donks get through their first games in a few weeks & also make handy contributions.

Moving forward, we take on Whitfords on their home deck this week which will be a challenging task. The toughest thing about being in top spot is that every team is looking to knock us off & we have to make sure we maintain that intensity for the contest week in & week out.

Thirds: Wembley 13-13-91 defeated Wanneroo 5-3-33.

The Thirds continued their return to form in Round 9 by recording a solid 58-point victory over their opponents from Wanneroo. The Thirds have now banked three wins in a row and are starting to make their climb back up the ladder and into the top two spots with a massive game to come in Round 10 against the ladder leading Whitfords.
