Round 10: Review

22 Jun 2015 by Wembley Magpies

The Wembley Amateur Football Club had yet another successful weekend on-field banking four wins from five matches in Round 10.

For the second week running the Firsts (B Grade), Seconds (B Reserve) and Colts (Drew Banfield Colts) were at home at Pat Goodridge Reserve and played host to Wanneroo in Round 10.

Colts: Wembley 10-6-66 defeated Wanneroo 6-5-41.

First up at Pat Goodridge on Saturday morning was the Colts who were looking to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive when they took on lowly-placed Wanneroo. In a match that was much closer than many would have expected given the differing fortunes of both sides in the first half of the season, Wembley were able to keep their unbeaten streak alive and extended it to nine games with a 25-point victory.

Seconds: Wembley 12-8-80 defeated Wanneroo 1-9-15.

Ressies needed capitalise on on the big win against the ladder leader in the previous week and did so with another solid performance against Wanneroo. After dominating position in blustery conditions in the first quarter, the lads converted on the scoreboard in the second and third terms to put Wanneroo away before 3/4 time. Final score 12.8 to 1.9 probably flattered the opposition. Consistent high quality footy across the ground is playing a big part in the Ressies game at the moment which pleasing. Keep it up!

Firsts: Wembley 15-13-103 defeated Wanneroo 8-5-53.

Great to get back on the winners list! But more importantly great to get back to playing our attacking and intense Wembley style of footy. Coming up against the top of the table was always going to be tough, but all the boys came to play. Great to see a couple more of our gun colts making their debut and Daniel Reid returning from a serious knee injury – all three had terrific games!

The Thirds and Fourths were on the road in Round 10 and headed to Forrest Park to take on Whitfords, opponents that both sides will face again should they qualify for the finals this season.

Fourths: Wembley 15-7-97 defeated Whitfords 4-5-29

A very pleasing result on Saturday. I thought we overcame a poor start & really worked our way into the contest after quarter time. From then on, our workrate & preparedness to run & carry & take the game on was simply outstanding. I was very happy, especially after losing our best contested ball winner in Dane, within the first few minutes & Tails, Stumpers & Smithy at varying stages within the match, that others were prepared to pick up the slack & have a real impact. I think Saturday’s win against a decent opposition, sent a very clear statement, that we have plenty of depth within our team & that when guys are called upon to play a role, they are willing to respond.

I thought Kon was outstanding all day & is now the key focal point in attack. He finished with 5 or 6 goals & his hands were clean all day. He had some good delivery from Picca’s & Bung, with guys like Pressie & Seal really stepping up in the absence of Dane, doing a lot of the grunt work in the middle. Stumpers move down back was a clear winner & together with Puzzles they killed off the majority of Whitfords forward entries after quarter time. Havo continues to lead by example & when the game was in the balance, found plenty of the footy & gave us plenty of drive off his wing.

Moving forward, we set ourselves up for another huge challenge in Hamersley-Carine after the bye. Despite a couple of key injuries, like we saw this week selection will be very tough, especially with everyone contributing. The side didn’t change from Thursday night, so as always we set the bar high with training standards & attendance. Enjoy the week off & don’t forget to promote the lower grade Ladies Day to your better halves, friends & family.

Thirds: Wembley 8-10-58 defeated by Whitfords 9-6-60

Unfortunately for the second time this season the Thirds fell by a narrow margin to Whitfords, going down by just 2 points in the final match of the day at Forrest Park. The match was tight all day with a number of lead changes throughout, however when the lead changed for the final time it was not in the Thirds favour.
